The recent article on the Roseville City Council Race has some interesting By-Lines to it:
Who is that masked e-mailer?
At least eight of these e-mails have gone out to recipients obtained by voter-registration lists. The domain server for the e-mails, “placercountygop.net” was purchased from GoDaddy.com through the domain name MarkKlang.info. That domain name is registered to Loomis resident Joseph Scharrer.
Scharrer isn’t new to local political controversy. In 2008, news stories reported that he bought dozens of website domains in the names of politicians he opposed to use the sites against the candidates.
Ooooooh, could it be?
They quote the “Non-Partisan” former employee of Charlie Brown for Congress (a liberal democrat) Lee Reed:
Roseville resident Lee Reed is upset by the partisanship of the e-mail messages. In 1960, at 21 years old, Reed tried to vote for the first time, but was turned away at the polling place, he said, because he “appeared to be a Republican” by his three-piece suit and shiny shoes in the Democratic-dominated city of Chicago — he actually planned to vote for John F. Kennedy Jr.
“I’ll never forget that,” Reed said. “I came from (a place) with some of the dirtiest politics in the nation. I moved out here to California. I want nonpartisan to be nonpartisan.”
Really? Then why Mr. Reed you file a complaint with the City Attorney’s office in an attempt to shut this blog down? Democrats. Free speech only works in one direction for them – you know, like the military ballots that several states deliberately did not send out in time?

Cannon, chief of staff for California Assemblyman Paul Cook, said he’ll focus on restoring jobs, improving the local economy and promoting public safety. The Roseville Planning Commissioner recently earned the endorsement of the Roseville Police Officers Association, Councilman John Allard and Councilman Jim Gray.
And now Tim Herman:
“I’m looking forward to being done with the (campaign) and going on to the next stage,” Herman said. “I’ve enjoyed knocking on doors and talking to people. I’m feeling very positive. It’s a long experience — I started walking precincts in 105 degree weather and (walked) this past weekend in the rain.”
Sounds like Mr. Herman thinks he has it won already.
(Pople) He has raised $2,866 for his campaign, mainly from the Placer County Democratic Central Committee, Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento and several individuals.
No surprise there. (The Stonewall Democrats are a lifestyle group of Democrats)
“(The campaign) has been very exciting and a lot of fun,” Rohan said. “I’m anxious to see the end of it. I’m just plugging away until it’s done. You do everything you can think of, and it’s best to just be settled.”
Amen, Susan. Just be settled – If I had a vote, I’d have voted for Sam and Susan already.
In the same conversation, I took the time to talk to Tim about his stances on social issues.
Tim related a story he experienced when he was young – to explain why he supports waiting periods on gun sales. He worked at a gun store when he was younger and related an experience about one guy with ‘wild eyes’ that was asking for particular guns by model name and the like.
This bizarre experience caused Tim to believe that anyone buying a gun should be subject to a waiting period and gun registration.
When I asked him about the Abortion and Gay Marriage issue – his theme about those issues was that he “did not want to stand in judgement”. Tim considers himself Pro-Choice but says he would not opt for an abortion himself or recommend it to someone close to him.
As to Gay Marriage – I think he understood I was also talking about David Larson’s marriage to Brad as well as in general. Tim’s attitude is that you love who you love and he should not stand in judgement or get in the way of that.
This is consistent with what I remember when we knew him in the Roseville Chamber of Commerce in the late 90’s when my business first joined that Chamber of Commerce. He never did like the innvocation that used to be a part of the meetings – it was eventually eliminated in the period between 2003-2009 when we were not members of the Chamber, ostensibly during 2004 when Herman served as president of the Chamber.
Mr. Herman also ran for Roseville Joint Union High School District Governing Board of Directors. His main issue was eliminating the practice of notifying parents before their children are taken off campus for confidential medical services (ostensibly Abortions).
When I asked him about this – Tim was quite straightforward – He felt that many children did not have good relationships with their parents and having confidentiality was critical.
Tim also talked about the environment some in our conversation – renewable energy and managed growth, but this was covered in my analysis of his ballot statement and part 2 of the inverview.
Without injecting my personal disagreements – I am leaving Tim’s statements as given to me in the phone call to stand.
It is my sincerest hope that the three part series on Mr. Herman was informative as to his philosophy and can help make a better informed decision as to how he would govern.
As I have written previously – I am at odds with Tim Herman ideaologically on a few issues. However, I have known him for 13 years through the Roseville Chamber of Commerce and also know his dental practice.
I had the ability to speak with Tim at length about a number of issues to get a feel for the only DTS candidate running for Roseville City Council. (Both Sam Cannon and Susan Rohan are Republicans)
I started by asking Tim about the Barack Obama signs in his front lawn – several people reported to me that they has seen them. Tim insisted that was someone else’s home and that he did not support Obama. (He did not specify who his choice for President was, and I did not ask)
Tim Herman did indeed endorse Charlie Brown with his title of Rec Commissioner over Republican Congressman Tom McClintock. Herman explained that he voted for Doug Ose in the Primary and then voted for Charlie in the General. He saw the moveon.org-endorsed Charlie Brown as a Moderate vs. the hard-line Conservative Tom McClintock.
In addition – Tim did confirm for me that his daughter worked for Charlie Brown’s campaign. Brown has since been appointed to the pentagon and has left the area.
(Herman’s daughter is currently working for Democrat Mayor of Sacramento Kevin Johnson)
I should have followed up about all of the local Democrat endorsements Mr. Herman is touting – but I think the course of the conversation explains why Herman’s endorsement list appears to tilt left.
Sam Cannon’s endorsement list is a cadre of local Republicans – including 4 fellow Planning Commissioners, the Late Senator Dave Cox, but also takes in DTS Placer Superintendent of Schools Gayle Garbolino-Mojica and DTS City Councilmember Jim Gray.
Herman’s Ballot Statement touts Gina Garbolino, Ed Bonner and Carol Garcia. Garcia re-registered Republican before running for Roseville City Council – the other two are Democrats. The connection between Garbolino, Garcia and Herman dates back to the Roseville Chamber of Commerce.
That’s where I met Tim Herman as I stated earlier – all three of the aforementioned were entrenched in the Roseville Chamber.
When I continue my series on Tim Herman – I asked him what his vision was for Roseville, his views on fiscal issues, social issues and his experiences that make him qualified his mind to run for City Council…
Suffice to say – Tim told me that Democrats should get out of his office and Republicans should stay out of his bedroom… that is why he is DTS. His selection of candidates in the 2008 Congressional race suggests voting consistent with the prior sentence.

I have spoken with Tim Herman at length and will be posting on his views on a variety of issues. I have been sharply critical of his leanings that I believe to be those of a mainstream Liberal.
I have known Tim for 13 years through the Roseville Chamber of Commerce – the bulk of Tim’s Supporters are related to the Chamber in one way or another.
I think, however that it would be fair to repeat Tim’s words and let the readers decide. I will also offer my opinions – as in here with the Ballot Statement: (my issues with it follow the statement)

1. Sustainability Action Plan Committee – translation Green. How Green? Wind Turbines? Mandated Recycling? Banning certain common items from the city? That is not going to resonate well with the right-leaning voters in the city.
2. “Everyone loves Ed Bonner” – I keep getting told, but he’s a Democrat. I love Gina Garbolino – She’s a Democrat as well. (She endorsed my Mother for School Board) Carol Garcia Re-Registered from Dem to Republican prior to running for office. Again – Mr. Herman’s ballot statement leans left with his selection of endorsements that he featured.
3. My biggest issue – Like Mr. Larson, Mr. Herman appears to be taking a “Green” tilt in his campaign –
I will take a balanced approach to local planning issues, proactively protecting our environment and promoting our outstanding parks and recreation programs.
Mr Herman is the only candidate to mention protecting the Environment in his campaign statement. This is another play to the left and could doom his campaign’s attempt to expand to the right.
Typically, protecting the environment is a hallmark of the campaigns of Liberal Democrats.
The rest of his ballot statement is a solid resume of community service and time in business.
