I will give Bryno Maryott credit. His days as a Democrat taught him well how to lie. But, there is no Right on Daily in Massachusetts. His campaign finance reports are crap and his spin could fertilize all the bombed-out parts of Camp Pendleton. Leave it to the coast news to throw a saddle on Bryno this time.

8th Place in 2018. We are going global with this folks.

Bartlett argued that Maryott’s fundraising numbers were false and misleading, pointing out that approximately $200,000 of the contributions Maryott reported for the first quarter was money that he loaned to his own campaign.

Bartlett also pointed out that Maryott’s campaign incurred $1,120,600 in debt during the first quarter, which she says calls the financial stability of his candidacy into question.

Let’s stop there. Bryan Maryott likely retired as a Certifiable, um Certified Financial Planner because he lost his ability to do math.

Bryno. Bryno. Bryno. You have less than $200K in the bank.

“He is not the candidate that people think he is, it’s all smoke and mirrors with Brian Maryott,” said Bartlett’s campaign manager Tim Lineberger. “He’s not a Certified Financial Planner, he’s not a viable candidate, and he’s not raising the money that his numbers suggest. If people fall for it, he will blow a chance to win a very viable district and possibly flip Congres as well.”

Remember Bryno lost badly in 2018 and again in 2020, when anyone with a pulse would have made Levin empty his account.

Then there is the other guy running who took a nice shot at Maryott as well:

“I think the big takeaway here is that Maryott is not running away with support, he’s just donating a lot of money to himself. Bartlett killed it this quarter —good for her — and Maryott barely raised over $200,000 even though he’s the endorsed candidate by the Republican party, and still he had to put in 200k of his own money,” Rodriguez said.

Joe slammed the GOP and Maryott – rightly so – because the GOP also helped amplify the Financial Planner Lie in a piece of mail Bryno used his meager resources to put out.

Readers of Right On Daily may recall that the California Secretary of State BEAT DOWN Bryno Maryott for lying to voters.

“We don’t approve/disapprove a ballot designation based on 3rd party complaints. We do receive them, but don’t base our review on them,” said Joe Kocurek, a representative for the state office. “We review the ballot designation worksheet and any accompanying materials provided by each candidate, then we reach out to a candidate if we find there is an issue of any sort with their proposal. We spoke with this candidate and we came up with a ballot designation that was acceptable for him and us.”

Translation – the SOS office got the complaint and talked to Maryott about his BS. Target hit.

Maryott has previously denied any wrongdoing in his campaign filings, arguing that his certification as a financial planner still remains active. Maryott acknowledged that he no longer practices financial planning or provides investment advice and that he is not active with any brokerage.

Well that’s a lie. Maryott’s Securities License has been lapsed for 4 years.

In order for a ballot designation…to be deemed acceptable by the Secretary of State, …each proposed principal profession, vocation or occupation submitted by the candidate must be factually accurate, descriptive of the candidate’s principal profession, vocation or occupation must be neither confusing nor misleading,” the law reads. “…The candidate’s proposed ballot designation is entitled to consist of the candidate’s current principal professions, vocations and occupations.”

According to Robert Stern, a retired attorney and former elections counsel to the Secretary of State’s Office, the successful result of Bartlett’s complaint is a win for her campaign, as such ballot designation challenges are rarely so swiftly resolved. What impact the challenge will have on the June primary is unclear however, at least for now, Stern added.

It’s very unusual for the Secretary of State to deny a candidate’s occupational status,” Stern said. “I’d guess it only happens a handful of times each year. So yes, it’s a win for the candidate filing the complaint. It’s also significant in the sense that voters get a lot of information from the three-word title candidates use to describe themselves on the ballot. If a candidate doesn’t raise a lot of money or isn’t as well known, that can really be something that identifies you to voters and lets people know who you are.

Undaunted, Bryno got the CAGOP to lie on his behalf:

He also calls himself a businessman. That appears to be another lie. Remember Bryno isn’t a Congressman, but he did stay at a Maryott Inn Express Last Night…

P.S. The CAGOP had better do a better job of vetting their mailers because this blatant lie is lawsuit and campaign finance complaint worthy.

But he did stay at a Maryott Inn Express Last Night…

Via the Coast News Group:

REGION — 49th Congressional District candidate Brian Maryott has officially changed his ballot designation after a complaint filed by Republican primary challenger Supervisor Lisa Bartlett alleged the former San Juan Capistrano mayor misled voters about his professional employment status.

Wait. I thought this was a dirty campaign stunt? So Bryan Maryott lied on his application to run for office and got caught? Say it ain’t so, Joe.

“The decision by the Secretary of State to force Brian Maryott to change his ballot designation only further confirms what we already knew – Maryott is deliberately misleading voters and pretending to be someone he’s not,” Bartlett said in a statement.

However, Maryott’s campaign has strongly denied Bartlett’s allegations and said he voluntarily made the change as a result of issues unrelated to the complaint.

“We recently and pro-actively amended our ballot title with the Secretary of State’s office, making a change unrelated to any threats from desperate candidates,” said Megan House, Maryott’s campaign manager, in a statement. “The CFP Board of Standards does not allow Certified Financial Planner professionals to advertise our credentials without the trademark, and the Secretary’s office does not allow the use of trademarks.”

Let me help Ms. House out. The CFP Association will prosecute anyone using the designation that is not eligible to. The part about the trademark is pure BS as we have all seen other candidates with the designation. Please do a better job of spin later.

“We don’t approve/disapprove a ballot designation based on 3rd party complaints. Maryott got beat down. Since Bryan Maryott won’t have a pot to piss in for his campaign, the loss of his deceptive ballot title is devastating. Tick. Tock.

Then there is this nugget:

Bartlett’s campaign may also challenge Maryott’s new ballot designation as a businessman/nonprofit executive with the Secretary of State, according to her campaign manager Tim Lineberger.

Bad Bryno. Stop lying about your occupation man. Just use “Unemployed” or “Aspiring Career Politician”.

#CA49 Bryan Maryott’s endorsement was delayed a month by the actions of one of the most giant alligators in the California Swamp, Howard Hakes, and his David Stafford Reade-linked assistant Mark Spannagel. While I think Maryott is a fraud and an empty shirt, he was chosen by the county parties, and the state party had no business denying him the endorsement he earned. (WARNING – Mr. Maryott, that endorsement will be the high point of your campaign because your intrepid blogger is coming for you)

Allow your intrepid blogger to opine on Bryan Maryott. He appears to be a deadbeat, a loser, and a complete fraud. Mr. Maryott may not realize that your intrepid blogger used to have a securities license. Your intrepid blogger sold mutual funds and investments as part of his insurance business in a previous life. CFP is a neat designation to have. (Certified Financial Planner) With the said designation, you can charge for fee-based financial planning, and it takes education, a license, and continuing education to maintain it.

Apparently, Bryan Maryott forgot this key detail when attempting to lie to voters on his ballot designation. The Coast News lit Maryott up

REGION — Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett has filed an official complaint against fellow Republican candidate Brian Maryott, accusing the former San Juan Capistrano mayor of lying to voters about his employment status.

Per the complaint, which Bartlett’s campaign filed on March 21 with the California Secretary of State, Maryott’s proposed ballot designation as a “certified financial planner” is “false, misleading, and unlawful because it does not accurately reflect his current profession, vocation, or occupation.”

Whoopsie. Looks like a local media outlet picked up on the feckless Maryott’s latest attempt to embellish his personal failure into a resume.

According to the complaint, Maryott retired from working as a financial planner four years ago to “become a part-time politician.” Since then, Maryott’s certification has lapsed and he has not earned any income from the profession, making his ballot designation claim fraudulent and misleading, Bartlett alleges.

Until his retirement in 2018, Maryott was a regional manager for Wells Fargo and served as a registered broker and investment advisor over the course of his career.

“According to public records, Brian Maryott has no job, no income, no business, and no license – he is not a certified financial planner, he is a fraud,” Bartlett said in a statement provided to The Coast News.

But he stayed at a Maryott Inn Express last night…

In her statement, Bartlett lambasted Maryott for “deceiving the public” regarding his ballot designation and for allegedly violating ethics rules during his time on the San Juan Capistrano City Council.

“The last time he had a job as a City Councilman, he cost the City of San Juan Capistrano $500,000 because he violated ethics rules, in addition to improperly using public resources to campaign,” Bartlett said. “There is too much at stake for our country in the upcoming election to pin our hopes on a dishonest and unqualified candidate who is a perennial loser in the 49th district.

“America is headed on the wrong track, whether you are talking about rising inflation, skyrocketing crime, failing education, weak foreign policy, and rapidly decreasing quality of life. We need an immediate change in leadership to address these crises, but if Maryott is able to advance to the general election by deceiving the public – yet again – it all but guarantees Mike Levin keeps his job in November.”

Maryott has no job and no money but he has a California Republican Party endorsement!

According to Tim Lineberger, Bartlett’s campaign manager, Maryott’s statement concedes the crux of the complaint by admitting financial planning is not his current “principal profession” as required under the law.

“The mere existence of a certification doesn’t mean that you’re able to engage in actual financial planning,” Lineberger said. “The requirement for ballot designation is that your title has to be your current occupation, he concedes that his occupation is currently not a certified financial planner. So, he’s conceding our argument in the complaint that he’s not engaged in this activity, and in fact that he’s not even licensed to do it.”

The complaint itself includes more than 50 pages of exhibits that Lineberger says demonstrate that Maryott hasn’t worked in a financial planning capacity since 2018.

According to Lineberger, not only did Maryott misrepresent his employment status in campaign filings with the Secretary of State’s Office, but he also lied to voters on his official ballot statement, which is publicly available online.

The ballot statement lists “certified financial planner” directly underneath Maryott’s name on the statement.

Bryno lied.

In Maryott’s case, Stern said that it seems as though Bartlett’s complaint has a reasonable chance of success since the former mayor acknowledged that he doesn’t currently practice any financial planning.

“The fact that he’s certified doesn’t really matter here,” Stern said. “I mean up until a few years ago I was still an attorney, but I’m not practicing law anymore so I’m not an attorney. It’s not your current occupation if you’re inactive in that field even though you’re licensed, that just doesn’t persuade me. If I was at the Secretary of State’s Office I would tell [Maryott] give me more facts and show me that you’re a CFP, or I won’t approve this.”

(Stern is a campaign law expert quoted in the article)

Bryan Maryott’s campaign has now begun the slow, painful descent to oblivion. Perhaps he should have maintained his license, because he won’t be getting a federal government job anytime soon…

Blogger’s note – with regard to #CA49, I support Lisa Bartlett as I believe she is far more viable in that district than Mr. Maryott. However, the point of this post is much different than whomever your intrepid blogger is providing campaign assistance to. The CAGOP will cease to exist if their rules are made a mockery. The CAGOP will cease to exist if consultants are consistently allowed to prostitute the party and subordinate the will of the grassroots to a paycheck or agenda.

In Feb – Bryan Maryott went before the CAGOP’s board of directors for an endorsement. Despite the efforts of the people supporting Lisa Bartlett, Maryott quickly got 2/3 in Orange County and was endorsed on the first ballot by San Diego County’s Republican Party. By rule, with 100% of the underlying population’s local parties in support, Maryott was over the 80% threshold. You need 80% of more of the local parties endorsements to be eligible for a CAGOP endorsement. Most of the time (keep reading) these things are automatic at the state level.

When I wrote yesterday about Kevin Kiley, I was unaware that Howard Hakes had engineered a parliamentary maneuver to screw Bryan Maryott out of even being heard for a CAGOP Endorsement. Hakes, a significant donor and one of the most arrogant men I have ever dealt with, pulled the CA49 endorsement off the list of endorsements and then made a motion to table with Bryan Maryott waiting on the line to speak to the assembled CAGOP Board Meeting via Zoom. Jessica Patterson, the CAGOP Chair, went along with Hakes as he has been one of her biggest benefactors over the years.

Hakes is prominent in the New Majority and is currently the LAGOP Vice-Chair.

Bryan Maryott was told to leave the call. What a great look for the Party leadership.

Given what I learned about the internal corruption of the staff of the CAGOP and how they flout their own rules when it suits them, I was not surprised that they would allow Howard Hakes and his checkbook to circumvent the process of even allowing Maryott an up or down vote.

How does this relate to Kevin Kiley? The same forces arrayed against Maryott also support Sheriff Scott Jones over Kevin Kiley.

The meeting of the CAGOP’s board of directors is next week. I have no horse in the Kiley vs. Jones race. There are merits to both men for sure – but I would be remiss and inconsistent to NOT talk about the corruption of the CAGOP that continues to fester.

While some did not support Steve Frank for CAGOP Chair in 2021 because of personality issues, few challenged what he said about the state of the CAGOP. Steve Frank is still correct – the CAGOP has been overrun with consultants. While I get paid to do political work myself, I am still mystified as to why Consultants can not see the value in a healthy party structure and instead practice the axiom of, “If you can’t control it, destroy it.”

If Steve Frank was chair of the CAGOP I would not be writing this blog post. Maryott would have been endorsed in Feb and Kiley’s endorsement next week would not be in doubt.

Bryan Maryott played by the rules and earned the right to be endorsed by the CAGOP. One major donor who holds Party Office (speaking of conflicts of interest) should not be able to derail that.

Kevin Kiley likewise has earned the right to be endorsed by the CAGOP as well.

Neither man has an issue of moral turpitude or party disloyalty to disqualify them. Regardless of this blogger’s personal feelings or interests, both men have earned the endorsement and qualified for the endorsement and should be given said endorsement.
